About

We are all about building a community, sharing knowledge, and protecting our resources.

Let’s face it, there are a lot of talented fly tiers out there who don’t just tie flies, they love to fly fish too. And with that passion and experience comes first-hand knowledge, and a unique approach to fly design. While some fly patterns found in the TroutFodder fly box are based on traditional designs, many are one-of-a-kind creations that cannot be found at your local fly shop. All of our flies are hand-tied by fellow anglers who really know, and are passionate about one thing; fly-fishing. These are the same fly patterns they have refined, tested, and refined again; and the same fly patterns that they fish with, day-in and day-out. Whether you are looking for locally tied and proven flies for your next dream trip or something new to try out on your favorite home water, the TroutFodder fly box is the place to find it.

Why is Building a Community Important?

Our success is contingent on building a strong community. Quality and integrity are our motivation and we stand behind everything we do. As TroutFodder builds in popularity, fly tiers will have a stronger and more diverse market on which to sell their flies, and fly anglers will have access to an ever-expanding library of flies and knowledge to draw upon. We are only as successful as the community we represent – promoting the community we are all a part of is a win-win.

How we Share our Knowledge

There is a lot of knowledge, experience, and know-how that goes into the flies we tie, but behind every fly there is also a story on why each fly is effective, when to use it, and how best to fish it. Tap into the collective knowledge and experience of our community by connecting with the TroutFodder Blog where we share posts and videos that cover everything from fish feeding behavior to fly tying and aquatic entomology. Many posts are written by biologist and aquatic entomologist, Rob Hinchliffe, but there are also guest posts from fly tiers in our community from across North America.

Our Commitment to Protecting our Resources

You have likely heard of 1% for the planet; how about 5% for the fish. Members of our community are committed to sustainability, responsible use of our resources, and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems. That is why we think it is important to give back to organizations that support conservation efforts. Once TroutFodder operating costs have been covered, 2% percent of any profits will be donated to Trout Unlimited (https://www.tu.org/), 2% will be donated to Trout Unlimited Canada (https://tucanada.org/), and 1% will be donated to Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (https://www.bonefishtarpontrust.org/).

We believe in fair pricing for quality work and a superior product. If you want cheap flies priced artificially low by exploiting people from overseas, third-world countries, this isn't the place to find them.
